Mercury retrograde: the 3-line version

Mercury retrograde explained in plain terms: what's happening astronomically, why astrologers track it, and what you should and shouldn't actually do during it.

What's actually happening

Mercury retrograde is an optical illusion. Mercury doesn't actually reverse its orbit — it just appears to move backward from Earth's perspective because of the difference in orbital speeds. This happens three or four times a year for about three weeks at a stretch.

That's the astronomy. Now here's why astrologers pay attention to it.

What it's actually associated with

Mercury rules communication, travel, technology, and contracts. When it's retrograde, the tradition holds that these areas become friction-prone — messages get lost, plans change, devices glitch, agreements need revision.

Does retrograde cause these things? Almost certainly not in any direct mechanical sense. Is it a useful calendar prompt to slow down and double-check the details you normally skip? That part is genuinely practical.

The people who have terrible retrogrades are usually the ones who signed the lease without reading it, booked the flight on autopilot, or sent the email before finishing the thought — then blamed Mercury when it blew up.

What to actually do

Before retrograde: tie up loose ends, back up important files, confirm travel plans, don't sign long-term contracts if you can help it.

During retrograde: communicate more carefully than usual, expect delays without treating them as catastrophes, revisit and revise rather than launch new initiatives.

After retrograde (the "shadow" period): things normalize over about two weeks. Don't expect the moment it ends to be an immediate green light.

What to stop doing

Blaming every inconvenience in your life on Mercury retrograde. Your phone didn't break because of astrology — it broke because it was three years old. Retrograde is a seasonal lens, not a scapegoat.
